This book summarizes recent research development on biochar production and applications with a focus on the application of biochar technology in wastewater treatment. An overview succinctly summarizes different technologies for biochar production and characterization, with an emphasis on pre-treatment of feedstock and post treatment. Subsequent sections are organized according to each potential roles of biochar in different sectors of wastewater treatment, i.e., (i) adsorption (ii) filtration, (iii) anaerobic degradation, (iv) sludge composting, (v) advanced oxidation process, (vi) pharmaceuticals and personal care products and emerging contaminants removal. These chapters discuss the mechanisms of biochar’s various role in different functions of wastewater treatment and include recent research advances in condition optimizations and improvements to update the material with desirable environmental effect. Discussions and case studies are incorporated in treating industrial wastewater, agricultural wastewater, and stormwater, to separately discuss and emphasizes the promising prospects of biochar technology in the treatment of various wastewater in actual utilizations. Perspectives and future research directions of the emerging biochar technology in wastewater treatment are presented to provide insights for the readers and researches in biochar application in wastewater treatment.
